The Importance Of Crucifix Necklaces

By Raquel Durham

Strictly speaking, crucifix necklaces and other similar ornaments consist of a cross with an image of Jesus Christ attached to it. Western versions have the body of Christ in three dimensions, while the Eastern Orthodox Church have either a low relief or painted image of Christ. Without the body, a cross is not a crucifix.

The crucifix necklace hold particular importance to Christians of the Catholic faith. These images focus on the death of Christ by crucifixion. In this way, the sins of Man were redeemed. This belief is at the core of Christianity.
For both men and women, wearing a this type of necklace is a way of telling the world that they are a person of God. Many people like to wear them outside the clothing where they can be seen and possibly trigger a conversation about Jesus. Others prefer to wear them underneath their clothes, close to the skin. In this way, they serve as a reminder to be constantly looking for ways to be of service to their Lord.

Early Protestants, like John Calvin and Dr Andreas Karlstadt, were completely opposed to the use of the cross or any other form of religious imagery, believing them to be idolatrous. Martin Luther, on the other hand, did not object to them. More recently, in 2005 a teenage girl was suspended from school for refusing to remove her necklace.

The Royal Chapels of English Queen Elizabeth I were unusual in that they retained the use of this religious iconography. Their use was discontinued under King James I, apart from a short-lived reappearance when he was courting a Spanish woman. When the match fell apart, they were once again removed from use.
