The Lonely Nerd, The Funny T-Shirts, And The Babysitter

By Ben Mosley

When you think for just one moment about what a nerd is, form that thought into an image within your brain, you will suddenly see my high school yearbook photo. I wish I were joking. My hair was combed and gelled down, I wore terrible glasses that didn't compliment anything about my head, I lived off of a diet of triscuits and soda, and I had all of the social charm of a wet rug. I am not being hard on myself, I promise you. My hobbies included browsing the Internet for funny things, playing multiplayer games, and collecting funny t-shirts. I had a serious passion for funny t-shirts, and I had collected lots of them.
I had a moment of self doubt and guilt one day about the direction my life was headed. My mother came to my room and asked me for a favor, which was actually a business proposition since I would be well compensated for my troubles. My parents like to go out together on Wednesday nights. All that had stopped about a year previous because my mother was getting close to her due date with my little baby sister and was put on bed rest for various minor complications. My sister has been around for around 6 months at this point so they wanted to continue their weekly date tradition. I told mom I couldn't do it. I had raids planned with my online game. What kind of son lets games come in the way of their parent's happiness? I wiped some cheese dust on one of my funny t-shirts and promptly forgot about the whole thing.

It was two weeks later when my mom knocked on my door and poked her head in. "Tina is here," she said, "so don't bother her and let her do her job." I had no idea what she was talking about. I sat in my room, getting anxious about who this "Tina" person was. I threw on one of my funny t-shirts, excused myself from my game, and went downstairs. The baby was still asleep, so I walked into the living room to find one of the most gorgeous girls I had ever seen sitting on the couch and watching Adult Swim. I could tell she wasn't like a lot of other girls. She was thin all over with mousey brown hair and cute glasses that framed her face really well.

She noticed me standing behind her at the foot of the stairs and she nearly jumped out of her skin, which scared me almost as badly. We both laughed for a minute afterward and she told me to come sit down. She could have asked me to kill a rancor, and I would have happily complied. We sat and talked for a while, she laughed at my shirt and we talked about some of our favorite funny t-shirts. I could tell she was into Internet culture, but she never once looked at her smartphone and I admit that I never once thought about going to the computer either. It was a good talk, but the baby woke up and she had to go. I don't know what I was thinking, but I immediately took off my shirt, folded it, and left it for her with a note that said, "For you."

I thought about Tina all week. I couldn't get her out of my mind, but I knew I couldn't ever look at her in the eyes again. I would make a fool of myself. The next week, I knew she came. When I heard the baby crying, I went downstairs and left her another one of my funny t-shirts, folded, and with a note. I repeated this for a month straight, always giving her one of my shirts and always leaving a note. I expected to find them returned to me any day, but the exhilaration of her accepting them was much greater than my fear. After a few weeks, I finally went to talk to her. I told her how I felt, sharing emotion with someone outside of my family for the first time in my life. I was so scared, I wanted to just vomit and run away...but I'm sure that wouldn't have made a very good impression.

And that is the story of how I met the most wonderful girl in the world. She is perfect, and has been that was since the beginning. She has showed me how to live a more social life, introduced me to awesome music, and helped change my life with her understanding and love. All of this came about just because of some funny t-shirts, and most likely because of a very intuitive mom who interviewed several babysitters before finding the right one...for me.
