Monty Python's Flying Circus
This rags-to-riches comedy starring Will Smith was only on our screens for six years, but to fans it seemed much longer. Although there were some seriously hilarious moments including Will's jibes at his uncle's weight and Carlton's unforgettable dancing, as with all great comedies there were underlying themes of family and the ultimate unimportance of money and status.

It may be a cartoon, but The Simpsons is not just for children. This highly clever, satirical show makes fun out of human (especially American) behaviours and attitudes towards family, friends, religion, work and politics. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie and the rest of the Springfield gang have helped to make this cartoon a comedy institution.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Written by and starring comedy genius, Ricky Gervais, this mockumentary has become a national institution. Broadcast in many countries around the world and even adapted into an American version starring Steve Carrell, The Office's understated script and acting hilariously illustrates the working relationships between colleagues in an office environment. The programme clearly has universal appeal as it's won two Golden Globe awards.

Back to the UK now, for Have I Got News For You. This news-based panel show has been on our screens for two decades, reporting the world's and nation's most important breaking news with a highly satirical twist. Paul Merton and Ian Hislop have been the two team captains from the start, but far from being the more reserved on the panel, the two are to blame for some of the most controversial comments ever broadcast on TV.
