What it Takes to Become a Registered Nurse

By Lisa D Mason

Nowadays, most of the jobs in the field of health care are occupied by registered nurses. These registered nurses are responsible for allocating work to the junior nurses, and authorized practical nurses, and evaluating it. You need to have college education whether bachelor's degree, master's degree, or associate's degree in order to be able to earn twice as much as a school graduate. There are various online nursing schools which can help you to provide the right education to become a RN. Let us discuss what you could expect from a good online nursing school.

In order to become a RN, you need two years of higher education. When you have got the Associate's nursing degree; you will be authorized to give the exam in order to get the license as a RN. This exam is known as National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, which is famous as NCLEX-RN. There is another test which is NCLEX-PN administered to vocational and practical nurses. These tests mainly covers the comprehension, ability, aptitude which make sure that you are qualified enough to enter the field of nursing.
Nursing credentials are easy to obtain and can be done at any time after someone has completed their nursing program and passed the NCLEX-RN exam. Nursing credentials simply give you the education that you need to better help patients in a certain field. Some will go into gerontology courses, while others will go into pediatric courses. Other credentials may include maternity credentials and surgery credentials. These credentials must go through the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the National League for Nursing. There are other credentialing services, but they are not as respected as these two specific credentialing bodies.

The amount of money that you will make as a registered nurse will change based on the job that you take on and the requirements of that job. Entry level nurses make smaller amounts because they generally handle less-important issues in their job. These nurses are going to be expected to take vital signs of patients and record patient information. They may be asked to speak with patients after the doctor has been with them to better explain the medication they will be taking. They may also work with patients to help them to understand dietary and exercise needs based on their issue or the medication they take.

Those who wish to take on even further education and more interesting jobs will work to become an advanced practice nurse. Advanced practice nurses will specialize in a certain field to become a nurse anesthetist or a nurse-midwife. These jobs are much more hands on than the average nursing position, hence the additional education requirement. These nurses will be expected to provide care to patients and will be expected to administer medications. Many are allowed to prescribe medication to their patients - this depends on the state that the individual practices in.

There is no way to narrow down the field into a singular registered nurse job description. Even the same nursing position across the same state will change based on the type of care facility the job is in and the expectations those employers hold. If you are interested in nursing talk to different nurses and different health care locations to ask them about their nursing positions and the job descriptions of those positions.
