Hollywood Legends Who Went To Stanford

By Stan Ford

This brief post will run through the great and the good who have left Palo Alto, Stanford, and have gone onto to make their names under the spotlight of Los Angeles and world celebrity. Of the names cited below, not all stayed the course and graduated Stanford. It's true, some left Stanford to go after their Hollywood dream. To the East, next to the Crimson river, Natalie Portman once famously said "I'd rather be smart than a movie star". While Elisabeth Shue made a comeback after leaving Harvard to earn her degree in Government in the year 2000.

So how did the stars of Stanford fair?

Reese Witherspoon

The star of Legally Blonde, who notoriously starred as a dumb golden-haired in search of a Harvard Law Degree was once a pupil of Stanford. She attended Stanford to pursue a major in English lit, but after 1 year left to pursue Hollywood.

Ted Danson

The Star of a Boston Bar, not so far away from a particular Ivy League university, was once a pupil at Stanford. Ted Danson attended Stanford during the mid-60's, but his fascination in acting was aroused by his then partner. In 1968 he transferred to the drama department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg.

Sigourney Weaver

The star of so many legendary movies from Ghostbusters, Alien, Galaxy Quest and Avatar, Weaver went to Stanford in the 70's. In Avator, with an affectionate nod to her academic brand, Weaver plays a tough Stanford educated scientist even wearing the popular Stanford top while in the film.

Jennifer Connelly

The star of Labyrinth and Blood Diamond who is in possession of a Beautiful Mind, Jennifer Connelly. Connelly has captivated audiences for a generation. She studied English at Yale, before switching to Stanford in 1990 to study Drama. With her love for acting, and with the blessing of her parents, Connelly left the same year to fully grasp the roles coming her way.

Connelly is married to British star Paul Bettany.

Fred Savage

And finally, but by no means least, Fred Savage the star of every one's favourite series growing up, The Wonder Years. Fred Savage left Stanford in 1999 with a bachelors degree in English. In more recent years Savage has starred in Austin Powers, whilst his principle role is behind the camera as producer and director with Ugly Betty & Modern Family among his credits. Curiously, his love interest as Kevin in The Wonder Years, Winnie Cooper, went onto enroll in UCLA and produce a series educational best-selling books which includes 'Kiss My Math'.

As a mum or dad, or teen living your very own Wonder Years, be under no false impression your years of higher education and learning have the power to shape your future. These are your first formative actions as an adult so be bold, choose prudently, work tirelessly. To your destiny ...
