Attend Bartender School For More Employment Opportunities

By Mari Orr

Mixing and serving cocktails for a nightclub, bar or restaurant can be an exciting and rewarding job for any individual with the right personality and skills. It takes approximately two weeks to attend bartender school and earn a certificate. Tending bar can be a full time career or a part time job for students or individuals who want to earn extra money during the summer or the holidays.

Students attend classes in a room simulating a typical bar environment. Qualified instructors will spend approximately half of the time lecturing and demonstrating the art of mixing the most popular cocktails. Participants spend the other half of the time handling bottles and learning to use the beverage gun and other tools of the trade.

Instructors demonstrate how to make classic and trendy cocktails using specialized bar equipment, including a beverage gun, cocktail shaker and blender. Students learn to prepare garnishes and the processes for setting up and breaking down a bar. The course should include discussions about proper interaction with customers and responsible liquor service.

Reputable schools will allow potential students to sit in on a class or visit the facility before enrollment. This offers students a chance to get a feel for what goes on during classes. This is a good opportunity to talk to the instructors and ask questions.

Bartenders must be able to work quickly under stressful and hectic conditions. They are typically outgoing, friendly and willing to interact with customers during every shift. Bartenders do not usually work normal business hours. The majority of jobs have shifts available after dark and nightclubs stay open until the wee hours of the morning.

Many schools maintain job databases to assist students with job placement. Certification requirements vary according to state. Many states do not have a certificate requirement for people tending bar but most employers give preference to job applicants who have one. Attending bartender school is the first step to a fun and lucrative career.
