Scientific Studies on the Chaga Mushrooms

By Brandon Gilbert

The medical properties of Chaga mushrooms have been duly noted since the traditional times. For one or two years after world recognition of its health benefits, one or two studies had been conducted to probe on other benefits that it may still provide. Nevertheless notwithstanding its century old use in the Chinese Normal Medication and its availability internationally the attempt to validate its potential healing use for the treatment and prophylaxis of cancer and other ailments ended with unclear results.

The doubt and uncertainty of the data about the pharmacological properties of the mushroom is attributed to the wrong use of chaga mushroom. The part that has the healing power is the fruiting body and not the bottom part which have lower content and potential. Moreso, chaga mushrooms picked up inside ecologically threatening areas like near highways or business centers may pose health risks due to possible contamination of heavy metals like strontium, lead and arsenic.
In a study that wanted to systematize all available data printed concerning the chemical composition of chaga, the process of its biological action and their pharmacological activity, a few new points had been pointed out. Its botanic classification, Chaga mushroom is a terrestrial polypore fungus that belongs to the family of Basidimycota phylum, while more than 2, 500 polypore specie of fungus are described, only a portion have been through analysis regarding their biological properties. This shows 75% of the mushrooms to have anti-microbial properties. In Japan, some of the mushrooms that have polysaccharide components are sold in the market as drugs against cancer.

Sometimes, Chaga mushroom must be collected from a freshly cut or a living birch tree. The Chaga found in fallen trees and dry standing chaga are less powerful. The overgrowth is detached from the trunk while the inside loose area is removed. The value of the raw chaga mushroom is its healing efficacy and this is often got thru correct storage and collection.

In a recent study, a freeze dried chaga powder is shown to forestall the development of malonic dialdehyde concentration within the blood plasma. This was tested on rats that are the subject of 60 days of gamma-irradiation and to a lower level of proteins in the blood thats about 3.5 times compared against the untreated subject. The result shows that MDA is very delicate with destructive oxidization process, violation of homeostasis and destabilization of immune system protection.

Presently chaga mushroom is distributed worldwide in 1 or 2 forms like elixir, capsules, drajee, balm, pills, freeze dried and powder.
