The Power Of Art For Everyone

By Crystal Salazar

What one feels when they view or create art is personal. The power of art is so moving that people have found that it is successful in aiding mental health. The way it touches each person's life is to bring out emotions and share feelings.

Art helps children to deal with emotions, which they might not otherwise be able to. If something upsetting happens in a young child's life and they cannot verbalize, it can be detrimental to their development. Through the use of crayons, paints and paper a small child can express what is bothering them in a way they may not have previously considered.

In truth, anyone can be helped through the wonders of this medium. It is ageless, and can help no matter what a person's background is. If one wants to know, what is going on in another person's head all they need do is explore their creations. It is helpful to the person creating the art as well, because once something is down on paper it is easier to get a better idea of what the feelings are behind it.
It is a proven fact that troubled youth who are given the chance to express through art are less likely to become a burden on society. Children, in particular need these programs to give them a voice where they may feel they have none. If this chance is not there the youth will act out causing trouble for themselves and those around them.

Imagine for a moment having an unthinkable crime happen which leaves the victim feeling all sorts of strong emotions. These emotions are all swirling around inside the persons head and yet they cannot get them sorted out because they are too frightened to relive the event. They place a canvas on an easel and suddenly, brush in hand the emotions come out through the brush on to the canvas. Their bold strokes of jagged anger and sad blues with a touch of yellow symbolizing hope somewhere in all that hurt are powerful. The art becomes the conduit for the healing of a damage soul.

When one is in a rest home it is usually because they can no longer do things for themselves. It is a loss of control over their lives and it renders them powerless. In many ways, it is a reversion to child like behavior and thought. Art programs can assist the elderly to deal with their feelings and anger over this loss of power. It is a beautiful gift to be able to give to the elders of the society.

The need for these programs is dire. Without the power of art, we will lose many to their negative feelings. If this happens, it makes a society weaker and gives the gift of more problems to solve, rather than less. This sort of program is transcendent and touches everyone no matter of his or her race, creed or religion. Decisions that may look good on paper do not always work when put to the test.
