The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has entitled every citizens of a certain state to view the death record anytime. Virginia is among the state that has implemented such laws. Virginia death records are kept at the office of the Vital Records section in the Department of health.

Death certificates in Virginia are used for a number of reasons. One of the documents used when conducting a research on the history of a family. When processing legal matters that involve the deceased person such as insurance claims and transfer of title, one of the required documents is the death certificates.

Information about the person who passed away is indicated on the record. Such information includes the name of the person, the age and the place and date when the person passed away. The reason why the person died is one of the important information that can be found on the death certificate of an individual. Other relevant data that can be found on the document is the name of the spouse and children of the person who died.

The state of Virginia only keeps death certificates from 1853-1896 and June 14, 1912 to present. Only the cities of Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News and Richmond have files from 1896-June 14, 1912. The record is not given to just about anybody who request for it. Only immediate family members can get a copy of the death certificate of their loved ones. One has to provide the information of the deceased in order to retrieve the record. Information such as the name of the deceased, date and place of death can also be found on the death certificate. One will also be asked of his/her information along with the relationship to the person on the record. It would take a maximum of 14 days to get the requested file. Such request only cost $12.

One can request for the certificate from the office of the Department of Health Statistics under the Vital Records Section. The library of Virginia also stores death certificates at the Archives Division. The record can be obtained through mail, or phone request and the most common method is to go directly to the office and request for the copy from there. The fastest way to get the death certificate of a person is to search for the record on the Internet.

The use of the Internet to search for death records in the state of Virginia is convenient and faster. The search can be done even at home and the results can be obtained with just a few clicks of the mouse. Paying for the search may be the best option for those who seek quality results.
