Considering TBBT's Rajesh (Raj) Koothrappali - In The Eyes Of East Indians

By Daniel Turbin

On the TV series The Big Bang Theory, the activities of five people are featured - four men plus a woman.

Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter share a rental apartment and neighboring them is Penny's place. Howard Wolowitz and Rajesh (Raj) Koothrappali are coworkers with Leonard and Sheldon at a university. The men are essentially geeks but highly intelligent, that is awkward with women yet highly educated. Penny is the complete opposite being a cliche blonde who is gorgeous but not too sharp. Penny has got a sensitive nature and became close friends with the men almost instantly when she moved to her neighboring apartment.
In The Big Bang Theory, Rajesh Koothrappali is from India who's represented as somebody who literally can't talk with women, unless he is intoxicated. Raj is also portrayed as highly intelligent and often bullied around by others. Raj has had a handful of personal relationships, private and laid-back, with North American women. He is very in contact with his feminine side. He speaks to his father and mother by means of a web camera since they are in India.

Most of Rajesh's actions on The Big Bang Theory are not approved of by Indians. Indians could look at him as being a rebel, a defiant son and really not what a good man from India should be like. An East Indian man ought to be extremely assertive, able to dictate and instruct his family, capable of getting a woman without difficulty, and to be especially obedient towards his parents. Most of all, men from India ought to marry a girl of his dad's or mom's selection or at least an East Indian woman who has the same religious beliefs as his father and mother. Rajesh (Raj) Koothrappali has none of these kinds of things. East Indians could look at this as complete dishonor.

Americans from Indian ancestry may see Rajesh as being an an example. Not due to his shyne

Americans from Indian ancestry may see Rajesh as being an an example. Not due to his shyness and inelegance towards women but mainly because of his courage for not sticking to traditional Indian cultural norms. An American born Indian will not have the same amount of regard for native Indian traditions as native Indians will because they will be dramatically influenced by Western cultural norms.
