In as far as the aspect of South African clothing is concerned, it can be noted that there are various elements that determine the kind of clothes preferred by different people. The availability of raw materials also determines the type of clothes manufactured in this country. Of notable concern is the fact that this country does not have a national dress like other African countries.

There are various racial groups in South Africa and they have different cultures which entails that their preferences in terms of clothing also differ. People who share the same culture have similar choices of clothes. For instance, in traditional cultures, women are expected to wear long dresses while in urban cultures people have the right to wear any type of clothes which they may desire.
South Africa experiences different climatic conditions and in some provinces, extreme weather conditions are experienced in different seasons. Therefore, some of the clothes are specifically meant to suit these conditions. There are certain clothes that are meant for summer in some provinces like the Western Cape which may experience extremely hot weather conditions in summer.

Different people in this country have various choices of fashion and it can be seen that both men and women can select any kind of dress that satisfies their needs. Young men prefer casual dressing such as jeans and other fashionable clothes. Since the fashion keeps on changing, new clothes are manufactured on a daily basis.

Individuals who work in formal institutions such as banks are expected to wear formal clothes so that they look presentable to the clients they serve. Dressing is also used as a tool to uphold principles of professionalism. However, some organizations are not particular about the issue of dressing since they can wear anything nice.
