How Bill Collection Took My Life in a Different Direction

By J.e. Moncrieffe

Like A lot of people, I used to think poorly of bill collection companies. The general consensus is that these companies go out of their way to harass you by calling you incessantly at all hours of the day and night just trying to get you to answer your phone. Then once they speak with you they intimidate and threaten you by telling you that some outrageous consequence is coming your way if you don't immediately pay. However, my experience has been very different. As someone who rarely does anything on time, I had obviously fallen behind on my credit card payments and these people were calling me pretty often. One day I answered and the company I dealt with and the representative I spoke with really were so great to me and made me change my opinion on bill collection companies. Here are a couple of good reasons why you should too.
The first time I saw this number pop up in my missed calls I obviously just assumed it was a misdial. However, soon after that, it began to show up more frequently and I finally realized it was a bill collection agency. Like I said, I am an irresponsible person and I own it, so in irresponsible fashion I ignored the calls. Although one afternoon I was in a complete rush, as usual, and my phone rang and without even glancing to see who it was I just answered it.

They actually want to make it able for you to pay off their debt! Whether it's a commercial bill collection agency or a consumer bill collection agency the representatives calling you don't get paid by standard payroll. These people work off commission; which means they don't get paid unless you pay. This allows them to work with you and better assist you in finding a payment option that works for the both of you.

In most fields there are ethics and rules that should be adhered to, and the same goes for bill collection. This is one of the major concerns of companies debating whether or not to use bill collection agencies. However, everything you need to know as a client and everything the collector needs to know can be found in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This go-to code of conduct makes it easy for everyone to know what is expected and allowed of a bill collection agency.

Bill collectors are just doing their job the same way everyone else in America does. They get paid to consistently call and ultimately collect the payment. I think if all of us who have outstanding debt either actually just paid our bills on time or at least just made certain payment arrangements to prevent our accounts from going into collection we all wouldn't feel so bad about these people who are just trying to earn a living and do their job.

Their desire is not to cheat anyone out of money or "scam" anyone. Their efforts are made exclusively to benefit you, whether you're the client or the debtor.
