The niche market, of the fantasy and lore types of stories, has been around since the 1930s and has had a fairly steady following. The first authors and many subsequent authors of this genre have in fact achieved legendary status due to their strong following and imagination. Here are the following possible best fantasy books of all time out there on the shelves today.
J. R. R. Tolkien started the whole ball rolling when he wrote The Hobbit. In this book, the writer brought forth his imagination that have basically defined what is the structure and element of the fantasy genre to this day. Without this book, we would have no idea about elves, orcs, goblins, trolls and many other creatures that have been copied and pasted into many other fantasy stories we see today.

The Hobbit was followed up by Tolkien with the writing of The Two Towers and later on followed by the last book the Return of the King. All three comprise a trilogy named the Lord of the Rings. This trilogy has affected many of us as seen in the commercialized versions in games, movies, franchises and more. It has led to a cult following of people speaking Orcish and Elvish in many cosplay events and followings.
Tolkien began something not known in the world of literature before in that he was probably one of the first authors to have sequels in his novels. This is something that David Eddings has done in his novels comprising The Belgariad and The Mallorean.
The Belgariad is a tale comprised of five volumes. The story begins with the Pawn of Prophecy, and these and the other books are unique in that they affected the Dungeons and Dragons game in the 1980s as their unique plots were borrowed by some game designers for the tabletop based game. It is also one of the few stories that lets the reader rely heavily on maps so as not to get lost in the story.
The Narnia series of C. S. Lewis in the 1930s should not be left out of the discussion either. This huge compilation of linear stories comprising seven books has a following across every age level. It starts with the iconic the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe and ends with the last book, aptly titled, The Last Battle.
The unforgettable characters coming out of myth and legend, as well as everyday animals that talk, lend to the appeal of the Narnia series. This has caught on very well with young re

This has caught on very well with young readers and stayed with them throughout their adult lives. Everyone at some point in their lives have seen these books in their bedroom as bought by their parents, that is if your parents really love to read.
The above books can easily qualify as the best fantasy books of all time. This is because their effect not only lasts in the generation they were written in but echoes and resounds to the generations after. There could be many other better stories out there, but they would have a hard time beating the ones written by the three authors above.
