By Kyle Piraino

If you don't pay your bills, eventually someone will come looking for you to collect. There are many situations that can arise if a bill collector calls your house looking for compensation. Even if you have already paid your debt, a collection agency can call your home when you do not expect them to asking you for to pay your bills.

If you owe a company money, eventually someone will come calling looking for the money to be compensated. People get very worried when a debt collection agency comes calling looking for money, it can cause a lot of anxiety. What a lot of people don't understand, is that ignoring the calls is much more harmful than you think. Dealing with the situation will help you in the long run because it gives you the ability to discuss with the company and possibly make a deal that benefits you.
Another situation where a debt collector can call your home is if you have filed for bankruptcy. If you have decided you do not have the ability to pay your bills and have filed for chapter 7, a bill collector may not know this and could call your home looking for you to pay this debt. A lot of people ignore this call because they assume that the debt collector will eventually get this information and stop calling. This is not necessarily true, the collector may not know this and you should issue your discharge order to the agency.

Even if you have already paid off the debt, a collector could still call you up. In this situation, again a lot of people will ignore the calls assuming that they should fix themselves. If you ignore these calls, the debt collection agency will not stop until you dispute the debt in a formal letter and make sure you send the receipt for proof that the debt is already cleared. A lot of people believe that they can just ignore the calls, but once you are late on your bills it has to be cleared up with the collector as well.

Some people have debt from a long time of paying the minimum. This causes the debt to eventually go past their statute of limitations. What that means, is that although you still have to pay the debt, collectors can be told to cease the calling. This helps a lot of people who are still struggling to pay the debt but do not want to be harassed by collection companies.
