Creation And Evolution Coexist Without Contradiction

By Doris Rivas

Creation and evolution coexist as words in the English language. They are both abstract nouns and as such do not denote any concrete form. They are abstractions, that are held in the minds of human beings when they see particular marks on paper, or hear sounds spoken. In that they are like all other abstract nouns in the language.

When a person looks up at a magnificent sunset he may see clouds and colors and the beauty of these may make him wonder about how they come to be there but they are not creation. They are only clouds and colors which are concrete things. Creation is an abstraction that exists only in the mind of the onlooker.

The same reasoning applies to the word 'evolution'. The collection of letters are code for a few sounds. The sounds and the letters represent an idea but are not it. The birds and animals that Darwin used in developing his arguments are concrete but the theory is abstract.

There can be no doubt that the two words evolution and creation exist in the English language and that they represent abstract concepts that exist in the minds of many people who use them and exchange messages using them. There cannot be much useful argument about that.

The acknowledgment that two words do coexist as different concepts does not take anyone very far towards answering a question that remains unanswered after thousands of years of trying. That is the question of how we come to be alive, together with billions of other life forms on a planet that revolves around the sun. Myths, theories literatures and much more have been produced in the course of trying to answer this question. Many thousands of years after the first efforts were made to answer this question it remains tantalizingly elusive despite the best efforts of prophets, philosophers and scientists.

When scientists pronounce their theories they use the imperative mood implying that they are asserting things that must be true. Prophets and philosophers do the same thing. No one is sure that Jesus actually said, 'I am the son of God' because the New Testament was written some time after His death. The Gospels differ in many details because they were written from memory. Even if these words were said they could have been used metaphorically without any intention of them being taken literally.

Despite the confident words of scientists, philosophers and spiritual leaders around the Globe and over many centuries it seem clear that no-one really knows the answer. It is apparent to any rational person that many scientific theories are wanting and that religious beliefs are based on faith rather than reason or logic. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries poets and thinkers began to dismiss dogma and theory and see the greatest truths in simple things. They argued that we are born in wisdom and knowledge and become increasing confused as we live in the world.

Charles Darwin postulated that all life on Earth might have evolved out of 'some warm little pond.' The word 'some' suggests not only uncertainty but faith. Though driven by a need to explain life he came no nearer to answering the crucial question of how it actually began than anyone else. His wife, Emma, was a devout Christian and the two openly discussed their differences in faith. In a strange way creation and evolution coexisted in their home which can be seen as a model of how faith and theory coexist in many homes.
