Own Fayum Art And Discover Family Histories

By Kelsey Benson

Every piece of fayum art work is unique and special. Some people can not fully appreciate the history behind each piece of this art work style because the model 's life meant nothing to those viewing it for the first time. Until the stylish art is viewed by people who knew the model intimately, the true story about the painting and the model who the image represents will go untold.

Men, women and children pose for these paintings and some will realize how the images will be used. The expressions that are exposed in the paintings will vary from one to another and the eyes will get the attention of visitors each time they pass by the painting. Some models choose to stare straight ahead without exhibiting any feelings.

A relative would be able to make many comments about certain facial features that are exposed in a mere painting since other members of the family bear the same features. Family traits carry on from one generation to the next, and these portraits will capture most if not all of them. Some travelers will stare at these paintings for hours because some parts of the face seem eerily familiar, and later these characteristics are realized as traits that are mirrored in their own image.

Some models will realize how poses will be perceived after they die and will want to capture a specific look or pose. These images will one day be posted at a grave site as a tribute to the deceased, or the model knows that it will serve as a way of identifying the body when it is mummified and placed in a tomb for all time.

People sense a surge of urgency when viewing these beautiful art forms. The character of each person is captured by the artist at a relatively happy time in their life. These funeral masks can be found in tombs throughout Egypt, and were readily accepted at funerals held during the war driven past of the Roman era. Each artists rendition of a persons face is one that will will remembered for a long time.

This style of funeral art has served as a method of identifying whose body was placed within a particular mummy case. Some paintings were buried inside mummy wrappings, especially when more than one individual was to be placed inside a tomb. This art style is named for an oasis that is located in Egypt and most commonly referred to as oasis of al-Fayyum.

Historians and treasure seekers have combed tombs and burial sites throughout the Middle East for centuries to retrieve lost paintings since these treasures are what connect families with a piece of their past. These depictions of real life individuals are highly sought after by collectors and families alike. Some are offered for sale to the highest bidder at some of the finest auction houses in the world.

Expressive and artistic style is depicted in all fayum art pieces. Painting on canvas with beeswax in a liquid format that is coupled with numerous tinges of tempera paint is hard to replicate. Family histories can be traced back in time to the era of the painting and families enjoy sharing these histories with others .
