How To Take A Family Portrait

By Don Wong

Things done with our family's help seem easier. It's more fun to spend the holidays with them, and it's more comforting if they're around during difficult times. But not all things are a lot easier to do with the whole family. Shooting a family portrait is one of those things. Although it is fun if everyone gets together, family members usually make up the most animated crowd, which makes it hard for a photographer to take their portrait. It's important, though, that a family has a portrait every generation since it's deemed a valuable heirloom.
In taking a family portrait, the secret is to plan in detail, especially if you have a large family. Some aunts or uncles might be unable to attend on a short time so you would need to notify them in advance. If the head of the family, traditionally the grandparents, is having a birthday or anniversary celebration, it's best to hold the pictorial session on the same day and venue so there's a good chance that everyone will be there. Everybody would have made time for the party, and it is also possibly that they're in a jolly mood.

For a Classic family portrait, ask all members to dress in their best suit or dress. You can also ask them for suggestions for a themed portrait photography. Maybe you can all put on national costumes or dress in a particular shade. Although there are no rules on what the family should wear during their portrait photo shoot, a lot of families choose to dress in coordinated clothes to show their unity as a family. Besides, dressing up in costume can be fun for the whole family.

Keep in mind that seniors and the young ones will be present so make sure that the setting for the pictorial, whether it's in a photographer's studio or someplace else, is comfortable for all. To keep everyone looking fresh in the photo, hold the photo shoot first before doing any activity.

There are distinct characters in a family. Even though you are all in similar attire and are told to smile all at once, everyone's character will still emerge in the photo. Not everybody will smile as perfectly as the others, and that's just fine. After all, the individuality of the members is what makes a family portrait complete.
