Why You Should Read Historical Non Fiction Books

By Celia Hall

Far from being dry and boring as many people imagine, there are historical non fiction books which can provide you with as enjoyable a read as any novel. Instead of reading what someone has made up, you are reading about real people, places and events which actually took place. Of course there are those plodding, dense tombs which only the most avid history scholars would attempt to read but many a history book can be gripping, with a good mix of narrative and action.

There are those individuals who feel that learning about what happened in the past is a waste of time. They do not feel that the past has any relevance for living in the present. The fact is that we cannot really understand the present without reference to past events. Reading history gives a deeper understanding about what made our world the way it is today.
Authors who write about history find their plots and characters in past events. However, they choose which facts to present and how they arrange them to formulate their arguments. This means that the same event can be presented in completely different ways. The facts are the same but the perspective of the author is not. For example, the perspective of a British soldier writing about a battle during a world war would be very different to that of a German soldier.

If you are interested in what really happened, it is a good idea to read various accounts of the same event. One of the best ways to get at the truth is to read original sources. Letters, postcards and other documents give an insight into the thoughts of individuals actually experiencing life at that time. Certain authors have the ability to recreate events in an intriguing way by using a variety of original sources.

Events in historical literature can be presented in such a way that you are drawn right into them, feeling as though you are actually living through them yourself. Crime, adventure, war and love - they have all been there through the various eras in the history of humanity. A good writer will enable you to experience conditions which affect humanity and to which we can relate but which are set in a past era.

Different cultures and countries have unique histories. Reading about the history of a particular cultural group can give an insight into why they react in a particular way or have certain prejudices. The history of a certain country can also make one understand why certain attitudes are prevalent. Without this background, we may draw the wrong conclusions.

This type of literature can provide insight into characters who lived long ago. These characters may be inspirational in the way their actions had a positive impact on those around them such as a Martin Luther King. Then there are those tyrants and dictators who managed to affect the lives of so many in a negative way.

Historical non fiction is not as boring as you may think. Reading such a book may give you a chance to enrich your knowledge while being entertained in the process. You can develop a new understanding of the world, the people who live in it and what motivates them to do what they do.
