Distinctive headgear is often worn my members of various belief systems or by the people of a specific region. The style and color may be a way to distinguish a person's status within their particular community. The Punjabi turban, in its many varied forms, is mainly worn by those in the Sikh culture.
Though spread throughout the world, the Sikh are based in Punjab, India and wear turbans because they regard it as a gift given to them by their Guru. It is required that all baptized members wear the covering to show their devotion to the doctrine and commitment to reach higher consciousness. It is also a method by which they may be identified as part of the community.
The head gear also serves the purpose of keeping their tresses, which are very important in this faith, covered. They keep their hair well maintained and long, going their whole lives without cutting it, to show respect for all the God has created. Most people associate this as a male article of clothing though young boys, women and children are also known to don various styles.
Turbans are commonly known as dastars within this culture and the style is known as a pugaree. Several basic wrapping methods are in place to be used as guidelines and an individual may make adjustments to make the covering fit their personal preferences and needs. Wearing the head piece openly in public is highly respected and shows a person's courage, commitment and honor.
In many cases, the type of pugaree will be determined by factors such as age, comfort, preference or even the size of their joora - the knot formed by their hair and worn on the top of the head. While a person may wear any style, certain types are generally worn by those of different groups based on gender, maturity and status. This is not absolute rule so much as a long standing tradition.
The Basic Dhamala is the old style of dastar worn my many respected gurus of the past and it is easily the most recognized style of pugaree. Young men tend to be drawn to this type of covering whether they live in Pakistan, India, Canada, America or the United Kingdom. It is perhaps one of the more famously identified looks and has the advantage of being easy to wrap and modify.
The Nok is another style of dastar that is widely worn in India. The result is much higher than other types of turbans but it requires less wrapping. It is commonly referred to as the Double Patti and is made by sewing two 3 meter long sections of cloth together, to make it extra wide and twice as full.
There are other types of the Punjabi turban being worn by the Sikh such as the Patiala Shahi, which is complex enough to be considered an art form and is generally saved for the elite and donned on special occasions, and the Chand tora Dhamala which is mostly reserved for a specific sect of people.
