Music Download Madness: Considerations For You and Your Computer

By Timothy G. Allen

In recent years, after following the trend of users coming on to the internet to download movies, many resources started to come out offering the latest music downloads. At the beginning this was great for most users, then the enjoyment certainly took a turn for the worst.

Website owners made (and continue to make) some quite unethical choices just to put a penny in their pocket. By adding pop up windows, spying software, and many other things to their sites, users were sometimes left with viruses and other elements. This is like after downloading an mp3, you have a new window (seemingly normal looking) but told you to purchase Viagra every time your searching the net. Awful to look at, and harmful to your computer.
If downloading music outside a major online store such as amazon or itunes, keep your eyes out for and be conscious of a couple simple things. This way you'll get the highest quality mp3 you can, and help out the music business. Keep these these in mind:

1) Check out the quality of the file. It can range anywhere from 20 kbps which is bad and blurry quality, to 320 kbps that is just about cd grade quality. Try aiming for getting music files that are above 128 kbps. If the file is below that, it will certainly have an unpleasant background that may sound awful if burning it onto a CD.

2) This may be kind of obvious because of most all of us having high speed internet, but just make sure your internet speed is fast. Try restarting you computer to get it back to the optimum speed. Before downloading any audio file, you'll want a speed of over 3 kb/s to get the song fast.

3) Check your computer to make sure you have enough space on the that drive you're downloading your file onto. There's nothing more annoying than getting to 75 percent of the download only to find out that you didn't have enough room in your C: Drive. Nowadays with our hard drive's spaces growing this is more unusual, but it's best to make sure before you start.

4) When you're downloading music for free, don't make it worse and make illegal copies. In preventing this, have the mindset of your downloaded music as a "sample". After listening to it and knowing that you enjoy it, help out the music industry and buy the album or mp3 file from an online retailer. In doing this, you will be keeping the music industry alive.

All and all, downloading music is a great experience and you can even learn about new bands that you'll want to go to the conce
