Cable, in a ton of ways, is a royal pain in a specific part of the body. Hence the rise of streaming boxes, which permit people to stream programming via Wi-Fi. One such upcoming product is Boxee Television, a streaming set-top box that also does DVR services and can get basic channels via an HD antenna.
Box links to Wi-Fi for streaming
There are a lot of boxes you can choose from that connect to Netflix, Hulu and more and have some kind of DVR function for recording. You just have to hook the box up to Wi-Fi, and you also start challenging cable and satellite companies.
A couple of years back, the Boxee Television got released. It failed miserably. According to Time magazine, the company is intending it again with a new twist. All DVR recordings will be held in the cloud.

You can pay $99 for the Boxee Television, making it pretty affordable, and you only have to pay $14.99 a month if you would like DVR services. That is pretty great.
An antenna on it currently
Users can use the Boxee Television as a DVR box since it has a cable port. It can also be used to pick up NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, CBS and other publicly broadcast stations because it has an antenna. It has applications on it for YouTube, Pandora, VUDU, Netflix, Vimeo and more.
The very best part of the Boxee Television is that you do not need any external hard drive for storage since all storage is done by uploading content onto the cloud that can be accessed at any time. It can record two programs at once as a dual-code DVR recorder, though live programs cannot be paused while you are watching them. It is more expensive than the Roku or Netgear boxes that are comparable, but having the infinite amount of storage is very tempting, according to CNET.
You do have to pay the $14.99 monthly charge, which probably will not cost you short term loans, if you would like to get the DCR service, though it is nice because there are no memory needs.
Limited in the beginning
Unfortunately, the hitch is that the DVR services for the Boxee Television, according to TG Daily, are limited to just a few towns to start with. Only residents of New York, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelph

Only residents of New York, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., will be able to get the DVR services. The company plans on expanding the network over the next year, though.
Everyone else can only use it as a streaming device, until DVR services are available everywhere. At that it fails, since other set-top boxes for those who want to cut the cord are much cheaper and have more or the same streaming native apps.
