Attending A Professional Directing Workshop

By Alison Wilcox

Some people have the dream of creating an award winning movie or television show that many viewers will love. Before one may actually achieve this dream, he must first attend a directing workshop to hone his skills. Being a director is actually very hard because there are so many things to take note of.

Now for beginners, the first thing that will be taught in these workshops is how to write a story. The story or the main plot is actually the one that will make the film good. The plot and the basic story is the one that will hold the entire movie together along with the characters and the setting.

The next thing that they will learn would be to write a superb script. If the story is the core of the film, then the script is the skeleton that will hold everything together. It is only through a good script that the characters can come alive and follow the flow of the entire story.

When one learns how to write a good story and create an excellent script, then he will learn how to make a storyboard. Basically, the storyboard is where the whole film is visualized through drawings so that the director will know if what he created is good or not. He will use the storyboard as a reference point when he starts filming.

When he has learned all of those, then he has to know how to fix up a set. A set if extremely important because without a proper set, then the film will not be able to seem realistic. The set will be the one to bring the audience into the setting of the story by making it seem like the place is somewhere that anyone can go to.

In these kinds of workshops, he will also be learning how to act a little bit because he will be talking to actors almost the whole time and telling them what to do. So the best way to know how to communicate with the actors would be to know what kind of language they speak. A director must also study body movement and language.

It is also important that he would learn from basic filming lessons would be how to use different camera angles and perspectives. This would mean the angle of the video camera and how people will view the movie. This is extremely important because it is through these effects that dynamics will be created in a film.

Now the last part of the directing workshop would actually be learning the kinds of special effects that movies use. Of course everyone knows that without the special effects and video editing, it would be hard to create a nice and modern movie. That is why trainees are taught how to use the basic computer programs for these. So if one would combine all of these lessons together, then he will definitely be able to create a film that everyone will love.
