How A Watercolorist Paints His Picture

By Mia Kent

Painting is a very broad art with a lot of sub categories like oil painting, watercoloring and many more. Now out of all of the variations, probably the most interesting of all these variations would be watercoloring because it is one of the easiest versions. Now a painter who does this is known as a watercolorist and this is the whole process he will take when he makes his painting.

The key to a very nice painting would be knowing the right amount of water to use. As a watercolor painter, one must know how to be able to play around with the amount of water that will be mixed with the paint. So aside from having his palette besides him, he must also have a supply of water too.

When the painter is ready with his canvas, then the next thing that he will do would be to wash the canvas a little bit. This means that the painter will have to soak the entire canvas with a little bit of water so that the effects of the watercolor mix will come out later on. So one should use a big brush to smear the paper with water before starting the portrait.

After wetting the entire paper, then the next step in the process would be to paint the background of the painting. To be able to do this, one has to first get some paint and mix it together with a bit of water. The background has to make use of quite a bit of water in order to produce a glossy effect.

Once this is done, the painter must now allow his picture to dry up a little bit before he proceeds to the next step. The reason why he must do this is so that the next layer that he will paint over the background will not run and drip. Also, it will look much nicer when it has already dried up.

After the drying of the canvas, the next step would now be to create the actual picture. Now this will be the part of the process where in one will be playing around with the amount of water that will be used. So the first step would be to scoop some paint with the brush, dip a little bit of water into it, then paint it on the background.

If one may want, he may play around with the color mixtures and different shades of color. If he would want a lighter shade of color, then all he has to do would be to use a little bit more water. If he wants a darker shade of color, then he has to use a bit less water so that the color will really come out.

So if one is interested in becoming a watercolorist, then these are some of the basic techniques that he will be learning along the way. In fact, these steps are actually the most basic and every artist in this field will have to go through them. Of course there are more advanced techniques that will be learned later on.
