A CV Fitness Programme - Do Not Delay; Start Today!

By Andrew Gregory Smith

In an earlier article I outlined the benefits of exercising at an intensity of 7 out of 10, or 70 per-cent of your maximum heart rate. The scale from 1 to 10 is known as your 'rate of perceived exertion' and will be referred to as RPE as I discuss how to develop your current cardiovascular fitness level in this article ...
Your objective is to develop progressively until you are able to complete 30 minutes of CV exercise at an RPE of 7 or above. This is the case for everyone, regardless of your personal aims. This intensity will help you to reduce fat and at the same time develop the efficiency of your heart and lungs (CV fitness).

I want you to visualize you are on a ladder and you are trying to get to the top. Each time you slip (perhaps you miss your exercises for a couple of weeks), just get back on the ladder and carry on climbing! Remember in my last post I told you that you have to be in this for the long term? Well, missing a few exercise sessions does not mean you failed, it just means you slipped off the rung! You know that you can if you put your mind to it!

Strive to finish three sessions of up to half an hour duration every week starting from now! Make a note at the end of each day detailing how you felt once you completed the training.

You may have noticed that I haven't told you what types of exercise you could be doing! The beauty of this programme is that it does not matter as long as it boosts your heart rate. If you are going to exercise at the gym, then the activity could be swimming, walking, jogging, cross training, rowing, or aerobics. If you are going to exercise from home then you can still walk or jog, or you may choose to do half hour of your favourite exercise video. If you like sports then you could play tennis, football or squash. Use your imagination!

It may be useful to look in your local paper to see what clubs and classes are available in your local area. Don't wait! Do it right now and get moving up the ladder! Once you hit the top, make sure you stay there by continuing to challenge yourself!
