Daily Planner Tips, Envisioning Your 90 Day Blueprint

By John Arnold

One of the keys to effectively using a daily planner is making sure that you begin with the end in mind. Specifically, you need to clearly identify where you want to be in 90 days. Just as a blueprint assists a building contractor by keeping them on track daily and helping them avoid costly errors, so too will you 90 day vision guide your daily decisions and prevent you from wasting time.

In order to create and effectively use your blueprint you need to follow three simple steps. First, develop a clear mental picture of how you want your life to be different 90 days from now. Consider various aspects of your life: your home life, physical and spiritual health, your work accomplishments, and personal development. Who do you want to be 90 days from now? What amazing experience would you like to have? What changes would you love to see happen? What would your ideal life look like in 90 days?
The next step is to translate your clear mental image into a written plan. The more detailed it is the better. If you were building a home you wouldn't want a contractor who only a vague idea of what your kitchen would be like. You would want to know just how big it was going to be, how much counter and cabinet space you had, and what appliances would be where. You would want him to have a physical drawing with specific measurements that he followed as he constructed it. You want your 90 day blueprint to be just as clear. Be sure that your goals are specific, measurable, achievable and written down.

The real key to effectiveness with your planner is to then consult your blueprint on a daily basis. When I first started using a daily planner my biggest mistake was that I often came up with goals, but then failed to consult that written plan as I made choices about how I would spend my time each day. Don't repeat my mistake. Look at your 90 day goals every day when creating a to do list.

If you do not regularly consult your 90 day goals, you will rapidly fall prey to distractions and urgent but low priority tasks that do not accomplish your goals. As a result, your vision will go unrealized. This experience can be very demoralizing.

I actually review my goals twice a day. I consult them once in the morning when putting together my to do list. Then I consider them again at night as sort of a review. I always ask, "Did I do what I said I would do today?" If the answer is no, then I make adjustments to what I have in mind for the next day.

Hopefully, you can see now why starting with the end in mind is one of the most essential dai
