Eliminating Workshop Hazards By Being More Organized

By Eddy Dearton

Several mishaps and injuries may take place within your tool shed or garage. Majority of the accidents that happen in this area of the home are slips and falls due to grease spill and items that are cluttered on the floor. And if you fall or trip onto equipment or sharp implements, that can be a really serious and even lethal problem. Fall-related fractures and torn ligaments can take several weeks to heal, and that would mean downtime and missed opportunities at life or work. There is also that likelihood of stepping on something sharp, or being hit by falling objects. Poisoning, accidental fires, and suffocation due to noxious fumes are also potential hazards in that area of your home.

As you can see, most of these accidents are due to mere lack of organization. To prevent these accidents from happening, keep your workshop floor clear of clutter and promptly clean up grease and spills. Also buy rolling tool chest or portable tool boxes to keep your equipment and supplies organized. Place labels on the compartments of your rolling tool chest so you don't have to guess every time you are searching for a particular tool. The same is true for portable tool boxes, but obviously, these will carry much fewer items, but handy to have nonetheless.

Install wall-mounted shelves so you can reclaim valuable floor space. Be reminded though that these shelving should be secured firmly on the wall, and be careful not to put more items than its maximum capacity. Avoid top heavy shelving as well and remember to store tools and supplies you use frequently in levels that you can reach easily. Do housekeeping daily as a dirt and grime can interfere with electrical systems. Secure shovels, rakes, and other sharp and large implements on the wall and out of high traffic areas. To further reduce the risk of falls, install handrails on stairs, and make sure that your workshop has adequate lighting. If a light bulb is busted, replace it immediately.

Adequate ventilation is also necessary to facilitate elimination of toxic fumes in your garage. This will also provide the correct ambient temperature in your workshop. Never forget that chemicals should be stored in properly marked containers. Take heed of the storage instructions of certain chemicals as not doing so can cause accidental fires. Make sure poisonous substances such as pesticides, automotive fluids, antifreeze are stored in a locked cabinet and out of sight and reach of your children. If you have gas cylinders in your residence, have these secured to your wall to prevent these from toppling over. As an added layer of protection, install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure that fire exits aren't blocked.

A neat and well-sorted-out workshop is not only pleasing to the eye and safe, it can also help you finish your DIY projects quicker. At the same time, since your tools and supplies are organized, you can make repairs before damages become more cumbersome or expensive to manage.
