Fitness Is a Skill

By Andrew van Ness

Perhaps you have seen some of those really burly dudes at the gym who are fully ripped and you thought to yourself "Wow! Those dudes are strong!"

Well, what you may not realize is that, yes, these men are indeed strong in certain ways. But they do not actually have a sort of versitile power that may be used in just about any area of life.

Rather they more often than not are only good at performing the sole motions that you see them do at the gym, whether or not that's bicep curls, bench presses, or deadlifts.

It makes you think though, what's the purpose of all of this?

I mean fitness isn't just about something that you do in the gym. You need to be stronger in a broader way than just being able to do an army press or some other exercise.

The end goal of fitness and strength isn't the adoration of all of the other sweaty dudes at the gym. The result of all this working out is to be powerful in your day to day life. This is why I like gymnastic rings.

When everything is said and done, you could doubtless care less about how many reps you can do of this exercise or that exercise. What you truly want is to be in a position to rely on your body when you want it to perform, whether that's at work, while you're playing with your kids, or when you're playing soccer or football with your buddies on the weekend.

But so many guys become a victim of the illusion of gym performance. The reps, the "warrior" attitude, the weight, the heavy metal playing while you are fighting to get that one last rep in.

Don't get me wrong. It's important to have a good way to measure progress when you're strength training, but it is important to not become confused about what you are truly making an attempt to accomplish from all your working out. It's a classic example of not losing the forest among the trees.

So what does this mean in your everyday life? This means that you should not put so much importance on consistently trying to squeeze out more reps, you shouldn't push yourself to the very edge of taking on an injury, and you should not feel guilty or ashamed if you need to take a little time to progress at your own pace.

Remember, fitness is something that you try to develop so that you can enjoy your life and use your body when you must use it. So long as you can do that, then there's actually little need for all of the fake macho behavior of the gym. Fitness is about having a great time and enjoying life.

Don't lose sight of the bigger picture, and remember to not let your life pass you by while you're exercising in the gym.
