How Do I Use Traps to Get Rid of Moles?

By Brian Thompson

Among the numerous ways that have been devised to get rid of moles, it seems that trapping them have always provided the most consistent positive results. However, the ways of setting up the traps and waiting for a mole to fall for it is not as easy as most people think it is. There are some factors that needed to be done in order to successfully get rid of these creatures that have been damaging your lawn and your plants.

Location is of utmost importance in setting up traps. Placing a trap in a dried up tunnel or somewhere where there are lots of human activity will give you with nothing. Look for quiet areas in your lawn that is seldom disturbed with any sort of activity. The hole that you intend to place the trap in should indicate recent mole activity. Look out for fresh cracking of the soil and other kinds of mole activity. Setup the trap deeper into the tunnels so your traps are positioned in active areas.

Moles are not big fans of extremes of temperature so during the seasons of summer and winter; they will be burrowing themselves deep underground. It is during these times that any attempts to get rid of moles with traps would be futile. Make sure that you set up traps during early fall and spring where they are likely to stay near the surface of the ground and search for food in the moist soil. That time after a light rain will also be a good time to capture them with traps.

When you set up your traps, think of the importance of cover. Moles are very timid animals and will always ensure that they are far away from threats and potential dangers at all times. Therefore, when you position your traps, open up the surface tunnel a little bit and place the trap immediately adjacent to the opening. Provide artificial cover to the trap such as leaves or straw so it does not look suspicious.

The moles? incredible sense of smell serves as their number one asset to get their selves away from any potential danger. Keep in mind that any foreign scent that they pick up, they immediately classify as that of a threat. Taking this into consideration, make sure that you install the traps in a way that you do not leave off human scent. Use cotton gloves that have been exposed in the soil or grass so that the mole will not suspect anything.

With whatever option you choose to get rid of the moles, safety should always be your top priority. This is especially important with the use of killing traps. Households that have children and pets might come across these traps and injure themselves. Make sure that you place the traps in places where they are out of reach and sight from children and pets.

If you look at moles on a positive note, their digging is actually a very big help to loosen up soil and create a drainage system. These are benefits that would greatly be favorable for dense forests and woodlands. Capture the moles alive and send them off in these places where they can also control the insect population. Live traps would be a choice to get rid of moles without the need for bloodshed.
