In my opinion, here are the reasons people get so out of shape as they age.
1. Health & fitness is not a priority - If you are going to be in great shape, you have to make it a top priority in your life. There are far too many conveniences these days that keep us from being active and too many unhealthy food options that keep our bodies full of toxic poisons. If you are not consciously in tune with these, it will be very easy to fall into a life of poor health.

2. Years of wrong information - If you spend a lot of time around others who are out of shape or pessimistic about life and health, you have probably heard a lot of myths throughout your life and once you hear something long enough, you begin to believe it. You may be accustomed to hearing older members of your family saying how they are too old for something. If you hear this wrong information long enough, you will think the same thing when you get to their age. Break the cycle now and realize that age is just a number and the higher it is, the more educated and prepared you should be.
3. They think they have too little time - This could also fall under health & fitness not being a priority. The fact is, we all have the same amount of time each day (24 hours last time I checked). It is up to us to use this time wisely and to set priorities for those activities that are most important. Those who argue that they haven't had time to stay healthy over the years are simply not being logical. The fact is, maintaining a healthy lifestyle hasn't been on their priority list over the years and something else has.
4. Injuries - Please note that I am not referring to those serious injuries that are physically disabling such as paralyzation, amputation or other seriously debilitating injury. It is understandable that these people are not going to be able to be physically active. I am referring to those with minor injuries who assume that nothing can be done so they simply give up on physical activity. Most of these injuries can be dealt with by using alternative means of physical activity. If you have experienced this type of set back, I would suggest speaking with your physician or physical therapist about things that you can do.

This is a small list but is the most popular "excuses" I have come across as a fitness trainer. Just know that anyone can be healthy and fit no matter what their age. With the right information and guidance you can acheive anything you want in life, you just have to get your priorities straight. If you need additional inspiration, just check the race results for your local 5k or 10k events. You are likely to see people much older than you on the finishing list.
