Everyone should do strength training. Since you only need an hour of training 2 to 3 times a week, it won't take too much time. For just 2-3 hours of training weekly, the benefits are great.

With regular strength training, you will:

Help you in day to day activities around the house and in your yard. You won't have to depend on others to do things for you, which is especially significant for older folks. Think of how you would feel if you can't life five pounds without help.

Decrease your chance for developing osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Prevent lower back pain.

Increase bone density which is important for post menopausal women.

Increase muscle mass, which enables the body to burn more calories.

Many people don't want to start weight training even when they are aware of the benefits. Most are worried about injuries and such, and women don't want to look like men if they get all those muscles.

It's ideal to start with machine weights since you'll be less likely to be injured. When you are used to the machines, you can slowly go on to free weights. You should be aware that the benefits you get from free weights are greater than those that you get from machines. For the women, you should be aware that people look masculine because of the steroids, and not because of the workout.

Usually, eating and running comes to mind when we think of being healthy. While these are important, strength training should never be left out. You won't be able to get the benefits from strength training from any other exercise.
