December 21st, 2012 - it's a date that I'm sure is well and truly stuck in all of our minds. For this is the end of the Mayan calendar, and with that, the end of the world. The Mayans (who are even to this day, renowned as one of the most advanced civilisations ever to live on planter earth) for some unknown reason, did not predict that time would go any further than this faithful day.
OK, so maybe 'end of the world' is a little pessimistic. In this day and age, if some major disaster was imminent and the world was indeed due to come to an end, you would be safe to imagine that we would know about it by now. That said however, the possibility of major global disaster on 21/12/12 is a serious possibility that we would be foolish to overlook. It's time for all of us to start thinking about our list for survival kit and what should go into it. If and when the Mayans are proved to be more intelligent than our modern day civilisation, only the people who are prepared and appropriately equipped to face all possible scenarios, will emerge on top.

A natural disaster or crisis can and will happen when you are not expecting it or not prepared for it. That's just an unfortunate fact of life. So it's important to take every possible step that you can to make sure that if and when something like that does happen to you, you have the tools and hand to help to look after yourself and your family. And it's this reasoning, and this desire to be prepared and equipped to deal with all eventualities, which forces many of us to want to have a fully prepared disaster kit on hand at all times.
When you are planning the contents of your disaster emergency kit, there are many things to take into consideration. Knowing if your list for survival kit is up to date however, is a different obstacle all together. Modern day survival products and technologies are advancing at such a rate that a disaster kit you put together a couple of months ago may already be out of date. Keeping on top of what should and shouldn't be in there is an ongoing project which you should always keep an eye on.
It's things like this which most people will not think about, which will make the difference between a survival kit list, and what we like to call a non-survival kit. Don't think about it in terms of the day to day items, think of having to rely solely on your survival kit for prolonged periods of time. Only by thinking about it this way will we start to realise what we actually need in there.
Which is, at it's most fundamental level, tools rather than products. Think about that old saying "give a man a fish and he will feed himself for a day. Give a man a fishing rod, and he'll eat forever". Go into a disaster armed with a multi-pack of crisps and a bag load of hope isn't going to get you far. Going into
