A popular and traditional exercise, push-ups are quite effective at toning and strengthening the upper body. However, they can have unwanted side effects such as wrist pain in certain people, and push up bars were invented to address this as well as increase the difficulty possible while doing the move. This equipment has both pros and cons.

Basic and more elaborate models of these devices are available for sale. The cheapest types are made of D-shaped pieces of metal, which have a flat side to place on the floor and a handle side for the user to hold. Models where the entire piece is one big bar that both hands are placed on exist, too. In terms of placement for the most effective exercises, single-hand models are more versatile.
In exchange for removing some of the discomfort associated with the wrists in traditional push-ups, these devices actually increase the difficulty of all types of push-ups somewhat. Core stability is enhanced in those using these devices, because it is required in order to maintain position. However, form is not automatically improved by their use, which many people believe.

Removing stress from the wrists and making the exercises target more muscles are the main advantages of these devices. By requiring more core stabilization, push-ups done with these devices can target more different muscles than the traditional kind. The American Council on Exercise ran a study that showed that the models with swivels between the handle and the base are significantly more effective than traditional push-ups.

The major disadvantages of these devices include the price, and the fact that they do increase the difficulty of the exercise, which is only a disadvantage for beginners. The more basic functions can be found in a homemade model, or on cheaper options available at the sports stores. More elaborate models cost more.

Doing push-ups in positions that are just a little different from the traditional one can have important effects on different muscle groups. Using push up bars can make some of these easier and some of them harder. A few variants are impossible with these devices, because they rely on the stability of hands on the ground.

Placing the devices in close to your rib cage and turning your knuckles in towards your body while doing the exercise emphasizes your tricep muscles, and other positions emphasize other muscles. Putting your hands in a wider version of the normal position creates a push-up that emphasizes the efforts of the pectoral muscles. Putting your feet on something creates a decline push-up.

There's really no need to buy push up bars if you are a novice without wrist issues. However, once you have moved beyond the basic push-up, or if you are having issues with your wrists,
