The Most Effective Way to Eliminate Food Cravings

By Vanessa Summer

Probably the most challenging part of sticking to your diet and taking on newer and healthier eating habits is trying to get over cravings for food. Cravings are a huge source of stress, stress makes you cheat then you feel stressed since you cheated and so on and so forth. Fortunately there are things that you can do to help stop those cravings for food and keep you on course with your diet. Here we'll share several of those things with you.

You need to understand what causes the food craving in the first place. Often a food craving arises simply because you experience a specific situation or external trigger. That's why it's good, before you begin any diet to keep a food and craving journal. This will show you what you desire and when you hunger for it. This, then, makes it much easier for you to overcome your food cravings as you won't just know what is causing them but you can come up with methods of avoiding or more healthfully dealing with the trigger.

Creating a comforting thought to think to yourself when you have a food craving is a good idea. One of many motivations behind food cravings is the coaching we do on our bodies to think of certain foods in particular situations or at specific times of day. If you think of a substitute to concentrate on at those times of day or in those situations, you'll eventually retrain your body and brain not to crave the harmful stuff anymore. Any person who wants to can retrain his or her brain with enough time or patience.

Food cravings usually occur because the body's blood sugar levels change--especially when they get low. When our blood sugar gets low, we typically start to want sugary and fatty foods because our bodies want to increase the sugar levels quickly. The best way to deal with these types of cravings is to keep your blood glucose as level as possible in the daytime. This is easy enough to accomplish if you have healthy eating habits. Additionally, it is the reasoning behind diet experts recommending that dieters eat five small meals throughout the day instead of three large ones.

Dieting can cause feelings of starvation which usually results in extreme cravings. When we diet, we usually eat significantly less than we usually do because we wish to reduce the amount of calories we take in (because then we can exercise away the pounds we are packing). Luckily, it's more than possible to eat enough to feel full without taking in way too many calories throughout the day. You only need to eat the right things. The even better news is that eating the correct foods will help you feel full for longer periods which can cut down on the food cravings that might have been causing you to snack.

Every single dieter hates having to deal with cravings. They are generally what causes dieters to be unsuccessful. Figuring out where these cravings originate from can help keep them under control which will help you attain more dieting success.
