Water Fountains From Around The World

Water fountains are used mostly for decorative purposes. Most of them can be found in public places such as parks. It is a form of architecture that uses flowing or air jetting H2O.

Majority of these were used for functional purposes back in the old days. They were built to supply water to villagers, which is then used for drinking and bathing. They were also used by Romans for decorative purposes. Some them were built to give honor to those who built them. Most of these were operated using gravity, and also needed a source which is higher than the fountain for it to let H2O flow or jet onto the air. H2O was also distributed using aqueducts and springs.
Back then, its use is not limited to H2O distribution alone. The remains of Pompeii revealed that most rich Romans had them inside their homes. Hence, water fountains back then can also be considered as a status symbol.

These and aqueducts were built in England and Paris in the early 19th century. It helped supply H2O to the villagers. There were 15 new water fountains that were built under the instruction of Napoleon Bonaparte, one of which is the famous one in the Place du Chatelet, the Fontaine du Palmier. This was built to honor Bonaparte's military achievements.

The same century also introduced a lot of innovations. Some of them used glass (like the one in the Crystal Fountain of London), cast iron, and aluminum in building them. Illuminated ones were also introduced during the early 19th century.

The tallest one in the world is King Fahd's Fountain in Saudi Arabia. It stands at 853 feet, and gets its supply of H2O from the Red Sea.
