Why Are Thin People Thin?

By Jennifer Bowers

You may look around you and see people who are thin, or at least in good shape, and wonder how they do it. Is it just genetics, are they born thin, or do they have to work at it? Often a lot more work goes into staying in shape that you would imagine.

Generate Energy

Have you noticed how the busy people with loads of energy seem to keep themselves trim? This is because movement boosts your metabolism, causing it to burn calories and fat. Movement doesn't make you tired though, becuase in the process of burning calories, more energy is generated, so you feel even more enrgetic.

Get moving at home without going to the gym.

Keep yourself busy at home, rather than sitting in front of the television snacking on unhealthy foods. Cleaning, reorganizing and moving furniture around keeps you on your feet, exerting yourself while you clean out a bookshelf or rearrange the bedroom. You burn calories while exercising, and keep your mind off food. It also helps psychologically. When your home is clean, you will feel more in control and have more energy. This translates into feeling better physically and emotionally.

Mealtime Portions

The next time you watch a movie, notice how the stars look during a meal. They often look neat and sophisticated at the table because they are sitting with good posture, taking small mouthfuls, and eating very slowly. Most of us don't eat that way. We eat far too fast, and take too much in one bite. Remember the phrase 'cutting off more than you can chew?' Put a mirror up in the dining room and watch how you eat. If you look like you're participating in an eating competition, you're probably eating more than you need to. Try sitting up straight, eating small mouthfuls and eating slowly, chewing your food thoroughly - not only is it healthier, you'll look much better too.

The Mealtime Clock

Some experts recommend eating three meals a day with two snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. This is to prevent your blood sugar level dropping, which can result in fatigue, feeling faint and overeating at your next meal. Snacks should be small and healthy - fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts or cheese - not a candy bar or donut. Having a small snack when you are hungry will keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

Body shape and bone structure can be inherited. Most times, however, it is healthy eating habits learnt at home in childhood that keeps thin people thin. When you next visit your thin friend's parent's home, look around, If you see a bowl of fresh fruit and vegetables instead of a cookie jar, eat lean, skinless chicken with a salad instead of red meat with loads of gravy, that could explain why they are thin. If children are brought up eating healthy, they tend to continue to eat healthy throughout their lives.
