Why I Am Particularly Fond Of Many Of The Modern Exercise Bikes

By James P Laxman

I first started using an exercise bike many years ago now, and this was only because a friend of mine gave it to me because she never used it. I had always wanted to get fit, so this exercise bike gave me an excuse to do so.

I still have a vision of this bike in my mind, and I can distinctly remember that it was very cheap and relatively basic. Nevertheless I had a lot of enjoyment out of this exercise bike over the following years and I ended up cycling more than 10,000 miles in this time.

Sadly nothing lasts forever and it eventually broke, which meant that I had to go out and find a replacement. To be fair, though, to last as long as it did was a remarkable achievement for such a basic model.

On this bike was a large front wheel, which of course sets it apart from many of the newer models that don't need a wheel at all. If you wanted to make your workout harder and increase the resistance, you had to turn a dial which increased the pressure applied to this wheel.
Although I really liked this bike, there was one thing that really annoyed me and that was the noise it made. When you pedalled away, the whirling sound it made was incredibly loud, and incredibly annoying for anyone else that happened to be in the room at the same time.

Of course this isn't a problem nowadays because virtually every single exercise bike that you can buy is extremely quiet in comparison. They will still make a little bit of noise, but it is nowhere near as annoying.

Indeed today's exercise bikes are a lot better in every respect. Not only are they a lot quieter, but they also have more comfortable seats and are a lot more attractive to look at. They are usually quite big and quite sturdy in comparison to those bikes from yesteryear and tend to last a lot longer as well, with fewer wear and tear issues.

The speedometers are a lot better nowadays than they used to be. I can remember what my old speedometer looked like because it was analogue rather than digital, and it used to tell you how fast you are going with a moving dial, as well as how much distance you had covered altogether since you first started using the bike.

Nowadays you will find that all of the new models come with LCD displays that tell you everything you could possibly want to know. For example you can see the speed, distance and calories burned for each of your workouts. You can even monitor your heart rate as well.

There is also the fact that you can take advantage of modern technology as well because there are MP3 ports and other inputs for your electrical devices on many of these newer models.

Therefore as a result of all this, it is quite clear that today's bikes are a vast improvement on those that came before. Whilst the old bikes served a purpose and were relatively cheap, they simply do not compare to today's models, and I know which one I would rather have.
