Chain Saws - Choosing Your First Saw

By Johnny Parker

How do you choose and use your first chain saw? There is a huge range of saws available in a variety of sizes and powers, from small, electric chain saws that are only designed for light pruning work, up to massive petrol powered machines that can be used all day to fell trees.

Before you start using a chain saw it is a good idea to read the manufacturer's instructions for safety first. You probably don't read other manuals first for products you buy but when it comes to a chain saw, which is a powerful machine, it is a good idea to read the safety guide. Don't struggle to learn how to use a chain saw, read the safety guide before you start the machine.

Chain saws have a series of sharp edges or teeth that are used to cut through wood. These teeth alternate cutting right and then left. The chain runs along a track that is supported by a bar.

One important process that must be taken care of with chain saws is maintenance. There are a couple of areas on the saw that requires constant lubrication. Both the two-stroke engine and the chain need to be lubricated. The engine with an gas/oil mixture and the chain with another oil source.

The chain lubricant can decrease pretty quickly since oil has a tendency o fly off the chain when it is being used. Make sure you use only the oil that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Kickbacks with a chain saw can cause fatal injury. A kickback is the sudden jerking of the chain saw when it strikes a hard object, like a nail, embedded in the wood. A kickback can also happen if the chain jams in the cut, which is fairly common when cutting soft timber. You can buy quick stop chains and chain saws that reduce the risk of a kickback.

Having appropriate equipment is important when using a chain saw. Be sure to wear ear protectors, goggles and pants that are cut resistant. A good way to reduce the risk of injury.
