Designing A Stunning Outside Space To Enjoy

By Francis Denver

Planning a garden or any outside space, can be great fun and rewarding, but it can be time consuming and effort to get it right. Like all projects, the best results come from careful planning. It is easy to spend a small fortune on your garden , make mistakes and have to spend time and money to put them right, so plan well and get it right, first time. The more thought you put into your design at the start, the better results you will achieve.

Be clear about your objectives. It is essential to consider how you currently use the space and how you want to be able to use it in future. If you would love a BBQ area or raised bed for example, include it in the design in a suitable location. You might need a pool or a summer house, or urgently need pathways to navigate the garden more easily.

Look at decor magazines and online garden design galleries for inspiration, there are lots of great resources on the internet with helpful information on every aspect of gardening design and maintenance including in depth information on the best plants to use.

You will need to measure the space accurately to make some detailed plans to work with.

If possible, use one of the free computer design programs online, which will make things much easier for you, by allowing you to experiment with the layout and make changes with ease. There are some programs specifically created for garden design and enable you to do some experimentation with various 'garden' features that you can simply drag and drop into your design and see how they would look.

You could look at your garden as a continuous work in progress. Plants will grow and change as they mature, in addition to the obvious seasonal changes.

If your design involves creating extra shade or improved privacy and security in your outside space, this will be a process that develops over time as the results are never instant, but that is just part of the fun.

An important element in your design is the colour it contains during the various seasons. You must combine the colours to get the desired look. We have all seen the type of gardening whereby the blast of colour lacks any coordination and assaults the senses! It is easy to avoid this type of chaos and create a harmonious appearance in your garden.

If your project feels overwhelming or your budget is limited, you can work towards your end goal, one bit at a time. Make sure you are completely happy with your design and clear about your goals, then tackle the garden project one step at a time until it is complete.
