Expert advice on garden maintenance from spring to summer

By Yvonne Ludeman

The real work in grass maintenance care is done between spring and summer. The rest of the year is about trying to minimise the impact of adverse weather on lawns. There are several different techniques and routines that different gardeners go through. Each person finds their own ways of sorting their garden that suits them.

However it can be observed that although all gardeners do things slightly differently, the core tasks are the same. There are some tasks that are simply essential when it comes to spring and summer gardening. This article will highlight what core tasks need done so you can work out your own schedule.

The first thing to check is that your ground is optimised for growing new life. This entails ensuring that the earth has all the nutrients it needs to support plant-life. In natural conditions these nutrients would be inserted into the soil in autumn. Unfortunately gardeners clear away the leaves which removes the nutrition from the earth cycle. This means that there is a need to implant new nutrients.

For flower beds it is as easy as turning the soil and introducing new fertiliser. This allows the fresh earth to be mixed in adding value to the old depleted soil. However for lawns the process is not as easy. This is because you cannot just dig up your lawn and put new soil underneath, not very easily anyway. To fertilise your lawn you need to go through a process called top dressing.

Top dressing consists of dispensing a small coating over new soil on top of the grass. This can be carried out by yourself or with the use of a machine. Your decision will depend on your time availability and the area to be covered. Manually spreading the soil takes a long time however it saves you the cost of acquiring or leasing a top dresser or spreader.

If you are manually spreading the fertiliser this will be done with a container and a spade. This means that you can use one spade of soil and spread it over the turf equally in patches. The procedure can be hard to do correctly, this is due to trying to make sure the soil is spread evenly across your garden.

Operating a machine based top dresser creates a much simpler task. It is as easy as filling the container with fertilised soil and pushing the device over your turf in equal strips. This will make sure that the fertiliser is spread evenly throughout your grass.

Making sure that your garden is fertile and supportive towards growth in spring is essential. Plants and turf need the right environment to grow in from the start of the season. It is all about laying the right foundations down. If you only start to fertilise once plants are growing it will never reach its full growth potential.
