Growing Fish And Poop With Vegetables In Aquaponics Successfully

By Victoria Kelley

Having a few problems with your aquaponics system? Maybe the ammonia, poop factor in the fish tank is a problem. Maybe you are questioning the type of fish to grow. Some people have a few questions about their growing success with the vegetables as well.

Fish will ultimately die with too much ammonia in the tank. That needs to be addressed quickly. A couple of suggestions which can help are emptying out half of the water in the fish tank and replacing it with clean water. If the system has been operational for a few months then you might like to add another grow bed which can help balance the pH levels. Check your ratio of fish and water. For example 5 to 7 gallons of water for approximately 1 pound of fish, with 250 gallons of water, total for each tank. J: Why is it so easy to weigh fish? A:They have their own scales. Just joking folks...
Vegetable problems are easily fixed in an aquaponics system as well. If some of the plants have some yellow leaves this could be a mineral deficiency like potassium or iron. Add a handful of red worms to your system to help in restoring nutrients and minerals. Seaweed extract is also organic and has lots of good nutrients that can help too. Two great brands are Seasol and Neptunes harvest. These brands depend on your location too, USA or Australia. Another hint is that you might want to avoid growing plants that rely on a more acidic soil. This is plants like garlic, huckleberries, ginger or Kiwi fruit. Other than that, pretty much you grow anything in an aquaponics system.

Flow rate, pH, flood and drain cycle problems. Here are a few simple solutions to try. For your flow rate check the size of the pvc. 1 inch pipe is recommended for the system. Can your pump handle all the water flow? A bigger pump will pull more water through the system. pH should be checked daily for awhile until the system is more mature. Nature and natural bacteria will help with your pH too. Your bell siphon may not be getting enough air into the chamber. This can cause a problem with the flood and drain and stopping the cycles from working properly. Finally if you are having flow problems check the pvc running from the beds and back into the tank. You may just need to do a simple adjustment with the angle of the pipe.

Gardening is fun and relaxing. We are not supposed to pacing the floor at night trying to figure out the aquaponics problem. There are a ton of videos on the internet that can help anyone. Try an online community for help and suggestions. We are learning as we go and new ideas are being introd
