How To Avoid Simple Gardening Problems

By Taylor Fernando Xavier

If you're just starting out gardening, or have been gardening for years, be careful not to commit common errors when planting your garden. These mistakes can really jeopardize the health of your plants. Experience is a great teacher, but trial and error isn't always necessary in order to learn how to garden successfully. We'll point out some mistakes that you can easily avoid - when you know about them - and this will help save you some problems down the road.

Appropriate gardening tools are a must. Even the simplest of gardening projects can well out of proportion if you have not supplied yourself with the right equipment for the job. One thing to consider, when you are digging in the soil and it seems like it is taking more effort than normal; this could mean that your shovel blade needs sharpening. You would be wise to keep the edges of your digging and pruning tools sharp so as not to make a simple job more difficult. When you let a wheelbarrow tote your large tools around the yard, your back will thank you for it. Given the hardship that improper tools can cause, you may feel like you have chosen a plan beyond your means, when you simply need to be sure to purchase wisely.

Pests can be a big problem for gardeners. There are large pests and small pests, but they all cause problems. Little annoyances - insects and various plant diseases - can usually be taken care of by the use of pesticides. Yet you can overdo it in this area, as using too much pesticide can be harmful to certain plants. Learn which small insects are good for your garden and make sure your pesticide isn't one that will kill them. Especially beneficial to your plants are ladybugs, dragonflies, and bees. If you want to plant according to organic principles, you'll have to rely on natural methods of pest control, such as garlic, mineral oils and soaps.

All plants need sunlight, yet each type of plant requires a different amount of light each day. As you begin to prepare to plant your garden, make sure you know how much sunlight each plant will require each day. It is important that plants get six hours of sunlight. More or less in different cases. It is also important to know how much sunlight will actually shine on the area where your garden will be. If sunlight is not something that is abundant in your area, some plants actually like shade instead. Do not over expose your plants to sunlight either as this will be detrimental. Reflected sunlight is also an option for some plants that cannot handle the direct sunlight.

It's important that you learn what mistakes you could possibly make when you are gardening so these mistakes don't escalate and cause your garden to be less than you desired. If you want a healthy garden, don't fall prey to the most common mistakes. Plan your garden well and don't adopt a nonchalant attitude towards the needs of your plants. You will have a great garden if you pay attention to these tips. Also, you can get great advice from your nursery or garden center or other people in your area who have successful gardens.
