Marijuana Grow Ops

By Castulo Zane

Houses and buildings used by marijuana growers are referred to as grow ops. If the grow op isn in a house it's called a grow house. Police estimate that there are more than 50,000 grow ops across Canada.

There are more grow ops every day. No community is safe from them. They can be found in every city, town and rural setting across the nation. North, south, east and west, they are everywhere.

Usually grow ops occur in residential areas- subdivisions or apartments - but they also crop up in agricultural and commercial spaces. Often several are found in the same area - sometimes even on the same street.

With time the growers gain more knowledge and experience. To avoid getting caught they take great pains to make the house look lived in. Often crop sitters will live in the house, giving it a semblance of normalcy.

While rented dwellings have been preferred sites police have discovered that some grow ops are taking place in houses purchased for the purpose. Some new homes are even constructed with purpose specific rooms designed to contain mold, humidity and smell.

Grow operations range widely in size. They can be a couple of plants in a closet, to ten in a basement room, to 10,000 in a warehouse. In January 2004 Barrie police discovered the largest grow op to date in an old Molson's brewery. They discovered and destroyed more than 25,000 plants worth millions. This size of grow op is not typical, however.

While the industry has steadily grown, some parts of the country are more exposed to it than others - specifically BC, Ontario and Quebec. There are regional differences - in Quebec about 40% of the crop is grown indoors while in BC it's more like 70%.

Because thre is a lot of money to be made marijuana growing has become widespread. relatively speaking the risks are quite low. Punishment is negligible. It has, as a result, become a million dollar industry.

Police say that organized crime is taking the place of small independent growers. A small investment allows a grower to reap considerable profits from plants that can be harvested every three months. Because marijuana is the most popular illicit drug in Canada, and because it is widely available, it is unlikely that this will change any time soon.
