Organic vegetable gardening for beginners starts several months before the first plant goes in the ground. You must first enrich your soil. You are not using any chemicals or any man-made plant food, so you must do it yourself. To do this you are going to use compost.
Buy or make a compost bin several months before you intend to plant. Place food scraps, grass clippings and leaves into the bin. Be sure to turn it often. The compost is ready when it begins to look like rich dark brown, nutrient rich dirt. You then turn this into the soil.

Once your soil is filled with nutrients, you can begin planting. You can begin seeds indoors, put them straight into the ground or use established plants. However, you must ensure that anything you plant has been organically started. This goes for seeds as well as plants.

Think of alternative ways to keep pests out of your vegetables. Companion planting is one way to do this. For example, plant marigolds near tomato plants to keep bugs away. Plant dill to attract ladybugs. Ladybugs will keep aphids out away.
