Taking Care Of Large Properties

By Roland Stockwell

While it is wonderful to own a home that rests on a large piece of land, this extra open space does come along with some added responsibility. There are some simple ways to keep you landscaping chores from becoming too overwhelming. So consider the following tips.

A simple landscape plan is ideal, as it is far easier to maintain and usually looks better than a piece of property that is wild and overgrown. Keep flowers and shrubbery to a minimum, perhaps just right around your house itself, as this is easier to maintain. The garden can be placed fairly close to the house as well, which will make watering easier, particularly if you use rain barrels to help you water the garden.

Consider planting items that are indigenous to your local area. These items are easier to care for and thrive better simply because they are meant to grow in your local soil and withstand local weather conditions. This also includes selecting the best type of grass for your area.

Grass is always a tricky business, but you can make it easier with proper soil and the right amount of water. You will need to test the pH balance of your soil and check to make sure that it has just the right amount of acidity; otherwise, you will need to treat it accordingly. Don't mow the grass too short, either, keep the height at about 2.5 to 3 inches. Many people over water their lawns, and grass usually only needs about an inch of water per week. Rather than water just a little all week, give it one or two really good soaks instead.

For properties that have a pond or even a lake, there is definitely maintenance that is required to keep the water clean and fresh. There are some great natural products out there that don't use any harsh chemicals. The Healthy Ponds product AquaSpherePRO is both chemical-free and biodegradable.

To use the AquaSphere, all you have to do in is throw the spheres into your lake or pond. You will need enough spheres to accommodate the approximate gallons of water in your pond. Each sphere will last for a month, and then you simply add new spheres. This product uses helpful bacteria to reduce organic matter and other problems. Veterinarians have approved this product as safe for people, pets and all wildlife.

In addition, if your yardage has fountains, koi ponds, birth baths, rain barrels or other smaller water features, there are also safe Healthy Pond items that will keep these clean using the same strategy of helpful bacteria. These products are an eco-friendly solution to keeping water clean.
