Gardening is a hobby that many people find enjoyable. Gardeners get to try their hand at creativity and nurturing, as they raise plants from their early stages as little seedlings to prize flowers and crop bearing plants. Winter season does not mean that a gardener can't grow beautiful and delicious herbs. Many cool-weather herbs can be grown if placed in a sunny location of the garden. Try growing favorite herbs that do well in colder months of winter like basil, sage, dill, cilantro, borage, catnip and many varieties of mint.

Flush your plants with water if the rim of the pot or top of the soil has white salt deposits. Flush using twice the amount water as the size of the pot. Salt accumulates when using liquid fertilizer and can cause a PH imbalance. Once you have flushed the plant, do not water the plant again until the soil is dry.

If you are introducing children to gardening, start them off with an herb garden. Herbs are easy to grow and you can start them in containers, which are easier for children to handle. When children see that the herbs they grow can be used in your cooking, they will be very proud of their accomplishment.

If you will be using chemicals in your garden, wear a mask and gloves. Invest in a chemical resistant pair of gloves for your hands, and a simple mask to protect your airways. Chemicals can be damaging to your skin and lungs, so it is always best to keep them out.

Pay attention to zones when choosing plants for your garden. Most plants will come with the zone marked. This is also true of seeds. Make sure the zone corresponds to your growing zone. Though plants may grow outside of their usual zone, they are less likely to be hardy plants.

Growing compost piles are a great alternative to buying traditional fertilizer. Compost piles are composed of organic material that slowly deteriorates making a nutrient-rich soil. It presents both a great way of ridding yourself of banana peels and other organic compounds, while providing your plants with a nitrogen rich mixture that will promote increased growth.

Have a good stretch before starting gardening work. A good five to ten minute stretch will help loosen the muscles and get the heart rate up. The bodies' muscles work better and are less prone to injuries when properly warmed up. Walk around the garden a few times and do a few simple stretches and the time in the garden will be a more enjoyable experience.

Water your potted herbs! Keep potted herbs well watered, but don't over-water, which is a common mistake. Sage, thyme, rosemary and tarragon aren't that bothered by a somewhat dry environment. On the other hand, mint, chives and parsley require constant moisture. Make sure that the container has adequate drainage holes, and place a layer of gravel in the base of the pot as a drainage layer. This ensures that the water doesn't flow straight out.

While growing your own fruits and vegetables can save you money on produce and cut grocery costs, growing flowers can give you a sense of pride.
