Do You Have the Skills to Make It Through a Disaster

By Warren Smith

A person's ability to think is one of the most valuable skills needed for survival. This is not to say being physically fit is not important, but survival does require the ability to set priorities and make rational decisions. You will have family, friends and neighbors that rely on your organizational skills in a disaster situation.

How would you cook breakfast if you awoke to no electricity and the water source was a long walk with a bucket? What was considered a technological breakthrough yesterday may be so much clutter underfoot today. Who has the skills to put food on the table without an oven or range top? Can you process a chicken or butcher a swine, and turn it into a meal and then preserve the meat by smoking or drying for the next meal. You must know about food poisoning. You will need to learn how to cook foods to destroy the bacteria that causes illnesses because there may not a government to inspect your foods before they reach your table. Pots hung on a tripod over an open flame may be your new modern oven and bricks will be used to bake bread.
You may only have yourself and family to depend on. Your tools may only be ones you can make yourself. This is where a need is identified and a tool or product is invented to meet that need. This is humans thinking and moving forward.

The so-called doomsday preppers believe that a disaster will soon strike knocking us centuries into the past. Years ago, families had their own gardens and farm animals such as chicken, swine and dairy cows. They in some cases milled their own flour; they smoked and dried their meats to see them through the winter. They put fruits and vegetables up in jars to last through the year. They could survive without ever going to the grocery store. However, there are things that you cannot grow or raise, but when it comes right down to surviving, you can get by without many things. You can begin gathering seeds and learning basic gardening skills. Learn the growing seasons and what plants thrive in your area.

Water collection, filtration and purification of drinking water are vital to your survival. Disasters will disrupt a community's infrastructure and in particular your water supply. You must know how to safely collect and purify any water source. You will have to learn how to laundry your clothes and possibly even make soap from tallow and potash for long-term survival.

Once, you have knowledge you must know how to make it work for you. Apply what you know now by improving on your home, making it ready for the day whe

You can practice by cooking outdoors for a few days to learn basic open fire cooking. Gather some gardening supplies and start tilling up a small plot for a garden. There is great pleasure and pride when you can harvest foods that you have grown yourself.

Stress is harmful if it cannot be controlled. If you have skills, knowledge and confidence in yourself, you will not become panicked or stressed when disaster strikes. You will know what to do if you begin now to hone your skills and practice what you know.
