The Infinite Variety Of Persuasion Topics

By Sally Hirsch

Persuasion topics range almost as far and wide as human activities. From international affairs in the United Nations organization, to big business operators to small girls persuading their fathers to let them do things there is a constant sea of persuasion in human behavior. It is possible that small girls without any training in psychology and limited life experience can be as adept as anyone.

The art of persuasion is a natural gift that small girls seems to inherit as part of their genetic make up. A slight girl is able to persuade her hulking father, who is afraid of no man, to do exactly as she wants. This illustrates the fact that persuasion is not so much about physical strength as it is about wile.
Of course there can be an element of bullying and threat used to make people do things. Gangsters are well known to used force as a way of making people do their bidding. This form of persuasion does not really qualify for consideration because the very word connotes urging or incitement rather than enforcement. A reluctant horse that is forcibly pushed into a horse box is not persuaded to enter because it never reaches a point of going in voluntarily.

Diplomats and politicians sometimes have to debate whether or not to engage in war. When America wished to invade Iraq many arguments were pout forward. Points made about the privations of the people did not convince many of the countries and it was only when 'weapons of mass destruction' were mentioned that they came round to joining the invasion.

Apparently, fear is a more persuasive force that moral rectitude. The fact that a dictator might be abusing his people did not convince the leaders of countries to go to war but the threat of violence did. Although force cannot be deemed to be persuasive, threats of force can be.

In business vendors try to persuade members of the general public to buy products. To do this they use information and techniques designed to play upon the needs of their target audience. For example, the 'fact' that nine out of ten women use a particular brand of soap to make themselves look beautiful plays on the age old need that women have to be beautiful.

It is in domestic scenarios that persuasion topics are most prolific and marvelous. Literature and culture are redolent with stories like that of Helen of Troy whose face was said to have launch

There can be no doubt that her face produced some gentle feminine whispering that complemented her beauty. She outdid even Cleopatra in persuading men to do things that they never even knew they could do.
