David Rohl On Rebuilding History

By Janis Hickman

Egyptologists are people who are fascinated by the wonders of Egypt itself. Their main goal is to rediscover what happened to the Egyptian civilization in the past so that the people of today will have a good foundation of history. David Rohl was among those Egyptologists who made bells ring loudly.

Rohl is a modern person and even before he was born, Egyptologists have begun excavating remains and doing carbon dating with some relics to rebuild history itself. Much of what they have found out have been accepted by academic organizations already. There was practically little to no room for revisions.

However, when David became full time with his studies about Egypt, he began questioning the dates in history which other Egyptologists before him had established. He proposed a revision of the order of the pharaohs and the events during their reign from the 19th to the 25th dynasties. This brought quite a lot of controversies in the field of Egyptology.

David Rohl was delivered to the world in Manchester on September 12, 1950. At nine, he was already able to visit Egypt and this visit aroused his interest for studying the events of the place. He began his early life as an adult as a musician but never lost his fascination about Egypt. So in 1990, he finally got his degree on Ancient History and Egyptology.

He was featured in the documentary entitled, Pharaohs and Kings A Biblical Quest which was shown on UK's Channel 4 in 1995. The same documentary was then shown in the U. S. Discovery Channel and the The Learning Channel in 1996. He took the Old Testament as his main guide for rediscovering the history of Egypt.

Indeed, other Egyptologists failed to establish a chronology that will make it easier for people to make references with the Old Testament. This is quite confusing. That is why an Israeli professor proposed that events like the Deluge, the Exodus, and the Sojourn of Israelites never happened. This was, however, opposed by David himself.

The implications of his proposal for revisions were wild, actually. Many neighboring countries of Egypt had their histories rebuilt based on the history of Egypt. Thus, to change the latter will also mean significant changes on theirs.

Indeed, David Rohl was one controversial figure in the field of Egyptology. Nevertheless, his works are still continuously being studied by supporters. This is definitely the disadvantage of studying history. Because we are so dependent with what we have in the present, we find it hard to trace what really happened in the past.
