How To Make a Dog Portrait

By Quillan Evan

There are different reasons why people get dogs. It could be as a pet or to guard the house. Whichever the reason, over time most people develop a bond with the pet and it becomes a big part of their lives. This has led some pet owners to opt to get paintings of their dogs. A dog portrait made in oil has become very popular due to many reasons including the fact that it lasts for a long time.

Handmade oil painting is getting a lot of appreciation due to the beautiful and lifelike results it produces. The art has been practiced by many professionals through the years. The same techniques have been modified, changed and adapted by most world class artists to make dog portraits.

Colors are very important in painting. For the final product to look beautiful all the colors in the painting should blend together. The artist should be skilled, able to fuse all the colors together, and keen so as to ensure that the painting is detailed.

Most artists use a photo to make a dog portrait because it is extremely hard to get the animal to hold a pose for the required duration. The first step of making a dog portrait using oil is to sketch the subject. Sketching is helpful because it guides an artist.

The painter should then add colors. This is done in stages and they should blend in together. A painter will have to switch brushes because different brushes are used to achieve different results. The small brush, for example is used to work on the facial features of the dog. After the pet has been painted the background should be added depending on the preference of the customer. The background should, however, not pull focus from the dog.

The choice of the type of frame to use depends with the client. The frame of a dog portrait is very important. Oil based portraits look more appealing when they are framed like traditional pet oil paintings. Features like the paintings solidity and easy maintenance also make it possible not to put it under glass. Framing under glass is still also popular and it is up to the client to choose the best option. The artist may even just roll up the painting and deliver it to the client in case of other framing preferences that will be arranged by the client.
