"Diagnosing and Understanding Vocal Cord Dysfunction"

By Rey Vetangelo

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a very real and very destructive problem in our society. It affects an average of seventy two million people in America alone.

This problem is commonly known as paradoxical vocal fold motion, and can be characterized as an abnormal adduction of the vocal cords during the respiratory cycle that produces airflow obstruction at the level of the larynx.

It often mimics persistent asthma, and is often treated with high-dose inhaled or systemic corticosteroids, bronchodilators, multiple emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and, in some cases, tracheostomies, and intubation. It can be quite painful, and very irritating.

While there are many different prescription drugs that you can take to control the problem, there are also some lifestyle changes that you can make to improve your condition. If these changes are made in advance, prescription drugs may be avoided.

Make quitting a personal matter. Make sure that you understand how you are going to make this process important and personal so that you can continually reference these reasons when things are getting hard.

One of the easiest ways to control hypertension in your body is to adjust your diet, and begin eating much more healthfully. Consume a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, including vegetables, fruits, and legumes. Decrease your sodium levels. Try to trade bad fats for good fats.

You can also try to eat less red meat, and more fish and poultry. A high fiber diet could be effective in preventing and treating many forms of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension.

Third, you should set a date for yourself to have completely kicked the habit. When you set this date you may want to consult with your doctor to ensure that you can consistently cut back on the nicotine consumption.

There are many people that will set dates for a long time out. In reality, you may be able to set your quitting date for only a week from the day that you decide to quit and you want to make sure that your quitting date is not too far out.

In this way, the larynx serves as an upper airway valve to help keep the lungs expanded. For this function, the larynx is richly innervated, and its size is regulated by the activation of striated muscles that are under voluntary and reflexive control.

It may be a natural weapon which can be used for those with pre-hypertension, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. It contains something called L-arginine, which can also be taken as a dietary supplement.

Try your hardest to not be judgmental towards those that are going to continue taking in nicotine. Make sure that you understand that this is a personal choice and you cannot force anyone to quit a habit with you.

Recent case reports have described other causes of this issue, such as an inlet patch of heterotopic gastric mucosa in the upper esophagus, and exposure to agents such as chlorine inhalation by swimmers or divers. The problem appears to be part of the spectrum of airway disorders caused by occupational exposures, including irritant exposures and psychological stressors, at the World Trade Center disaster, for example.

Fifth, when you take the time to quit you want to make sure that you are aware of when it will be the hardest. Make sure that you understand what is going to trigger your habit so that you can change your routines.

The fruit's bright red color comes from lycopene, a powerful antioxidant also associated with heart health, healthy arteries, and blood flow. Of all fresh produce, watermelon contains the highest level of this compound.

Changing up your routines and creating new habits can be very beneficial while you are trying to quit. Make sure that you keep yourself busy while you are learning to live without the consumption of nicotine.

If you feel you may be suffering from high blood pressure, talk to your doctor right away about what you can actively do to stop the problem from becoming more severe. Try introducing watermelon into your diet right away!
